Music

I've embedded music into my blog. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time and today was the day. It was very easy to do... surprisingly so. It takes a few second for the list to load, so be patient. To see the songs, and listen to something different, scroll to the bottom of the page.

Mid-Winter

Nothing is more true than when living in the Great Northeast, nothing is certain regarding the weather. This applies more to winter than the other three seasons. Winter started early this year -- in November -- and hasn't let loose. We've had above average amounts of snow and the temps the past few days have been typical mid-January temps: below zero! When we got up this morning, it was still minus 12.

Last weekend it snowed on and off with most of the snow coming Saturday night into Sunday morning. We ended up with 6 inches. Ron plowed early Sunday morning, and I shoveled the walks. I like it when we both work together and then come together to share a meal. I made home made pancakes while Ron cooked up bacon. The food tasted so good after being out in the snow.

Monday, Ron had a doctor appointment with the ENT. We went to breakfast at Westgate Diner and then headed home. I ran errands in the afternoon and then spent a lot of time on the computer, updating my spyware and downloading new software.

Tuesday was an Ember day. Boy oh boy, she can be so fresh sometimes, and as is typical, she loves to push buttons. I knew back when Tony was a baby/child that I did not want to be a stay-at-home mom, and being with Ember two days a week brings it all back. Em needs to be in a pre-school environment a couple of mornings a week. She needs the socialization and the cognitive stimulation. She's very smart. She's also now potty trained. There is the occasional accident but they are seldom.

Wednesday I was a total slug. It was incredibly cold and I didn't leave the house. Pretty much I spent my time on line surfing the 'Net, something I haven't done in a long time. Using the November issue of PC World (which I took from Ron's doctor's office on Monday), I visited most of the sites they recommended as good places to download free software or just to obtain information.

Thursday was another Ember day. It was mostly a good day for both of us.

Friday I painted almost all morning. The third bedroom is now under "attack" by my paintbrush. It's going to be a long, arduous job but I'm in no rush.

And today... I was out in the extreme cold to run errands around town. Ron's gone down to Russell's for a peek at what's going up for auction tomorrow. He heard there are antique guns. I could have gone, but I much rather be home alone.

Weather - See above for what's been happening. Cold and snowy.

Exercise - I've been treadmilling regularly. The boredom has been alleviated somewhat by my listening to an audio book on my iPod. I love my new iPod. :--)

Gas prices - They've gone up a few cents, but are still below $1.90 a gallon.

Life lessons - Winter always hits me up side the head like a 2x4. It's cold; it's depressing; it's darkness. If I could, I'd hibernate and not leave the house until spring.

End of Week

Jezumcrow, I hate winter. I especially hate winter living in this house. It's cold. It's drafty. The stairs leading from the terrace to ground level are hazardous in nice weather and life threatening when covered with snow or ice. I cannot keep the floors clean. They're either mud covered or bits of rock salt and dirt are all over. I am so freakin' tired of cleaning only to have it get dirty again. Of course, none of this bothers Ron or perhaps he just doesn't complain as I do. One has to agree, though, that walking out of the house with keys in hand and pocketbook slung over shoulder is a hell of a lot easier than putting on boots, jacket, mittens and sometimes a hat and then slogging through snow/ice wondering if one will fall. Ok.. wondering if I will fall. And even with all this prep to go outside, I'm still damn cold!

This past week was a typical one. I had Em two days. Ron had one doctor appointment. I did grocery shopping at Price Chopper in Catskill. Today I cleaned, ran errands and cooked. I hate to cook. Where is it written that cooking defaults to women?

Another reason to hate winter is how negatively if affects my arthritis. Some days certain areas of my body ache so much I could cry. My doctor prescribed a pain killer, but I use it only at night so I can sleep.

Gee, one would think I was feeling grouchy if not depressed. Actually I'm feeling both!

Happy New Year

A day late and a dollar short, but better late than never. Ron and I went to the Blue Water Bistro in Coxsackie for dinner New Year's Eve. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. The food is wonderful. The restaurant is in a restored building in historic Coxsackie with the original tin ceiling and warm wood floors. Unfortunately the ambiance makes it difficult to carry on a conversation when the place is full because the noise bounces off all the hard surfaces.

New Year's Day we went shopping. I remember when a child that January 1st was almost as big a holiday as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Certainly it was a time for the family to get together and have yet another big dinner. That was then; this is now. Malls are open, though they close at 6 PM. We went to Coloine Center to exchange a couple of presents and then to Crossgates so I could buy my new iPod Nano. My iPod classic died. I'm sure it's the battery, which is 4 years old. Battery replacement, which has to be done at the factory, is about $100. The Nano costs $149 and is a quarter of the size and weight. I love it!!

Friday was an Ember day. Though I keep on trying, it appers she no longer takes naps. ::BIG SIGH:: I do put her in her bedroom for an hour, but she's out 3 or 4 times to go potty (yah, right), get a drink, or tell me something "Vewy important Gramma."

Ron is sick with a terrible cold. It quickly went from head to chest, and I got worried about bronchitis or pneumonia. At his age, illnesses like that can come on quickly, often with hospitalization necessary. Thankfully he turned the corner late yesterday and today is a bit more better. He's still coughing, hacking and wheezing, but not as much.

All the Christmas stuff is down and put away, with the exception of the tree. It's nekkid... LOL... but still in the stand. I'm hoping Ron is well enough in the next couple of days to take care of it. If not, I'll do it, but the arthritis in my hands makes a task like that extremely difficult and horribly painful.

We were both slugs today. I did vacuum and dust a little, but I never showered or got dressed, and about 2 o'clock, we both took naps.

Weather - New Year's Eve and Day were very very cold and there was new snow when we went to dinner on New Year's Eve. It was also incredibly windy, which make it colder. The wind died down Friday into Saturday and today was pretty nice -- temps in lower 30s and sunny -- but I never went out. :--)

Exercise - I've been treadmilling almost every day. Not for 30 or 40 minutes at a time, but doing 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there.

Life Lessons - I've told Ron many times since we married that we need to change the way we live so that I can handle more responsibility if he's laid up. His being sick this week was a prime example of why it's necessary. For instance, we're almost out of rock salt in the tiny bucket he keeps near the back door, and it's supposed to sleet and freeze rain tonight. He has 50 pounds in the back garage, but I can't carry 50 pounds nor can I even get to the back garage because the mid third of the driveway is so icy, I can't walk on it. I haven't even put my car away in the front garage in 5 days! And Ron is too sick to go out. I told him we may be here until spring.
